FDA 2020 compliant nutrition labels require added sugars to be displayed on the label.
Added sugars are syrups and sugars that are added to foods or beverages during preparation or processing. They are often found in foods low in other nutrients such as dairy and grain-based desserts, sweets, and sugar-sweetened beverages. Note that added sugar is only required to be displayed on US labels.
Common types of added sugars:
- granulated sugar (other names: sucrose, table sugar, white sugar)
- brown sugar
- coconut sugar
- honey
- maple syrup
- agave
- corn syrup
- brown rice syrup
Other types of added sugars:
- beet sugar
- maple sugar
- date sugar
- cane sugar
- palm sugar
- confectioner's sugar
- raw sugar
- molasses
- sorghum syrup
- high fructose corn syrup
- barley malt syrup
- rice syrup
- evaporated cane juice
- dextrose
- maltose
To view and export a nutrition label that displays Added Sugars, follow these steps:
1. From the Recipes or Dishes page, select a recipe.
2. Click the "Edit Recipe" button.
3. Be sure to select the added sugar checkbox of your ingredient. Once checked, the ingredient is considered to be 100% added sugar.
4. If a user feels that the added sugar is too high or incorrect, they can click on the "Adjust Added Sugar" button to adjust the value.
5. Here, you can adjust the added sugar value of your ingredient in grams.
6. Click the "Export Label" button.
7. Choose the country in which the label will be used. In this case, USA.
8. Choose a label template that best suits your packaging and follow the rest of the steps to edit your ingredient list and add allergens, if needed.
