The USDA provides several databases of ingredients which are used in MenuSano. The following is a brief explanation of each database.
1. SR Legacy (Standard Reference Database)
The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Nutrient Database for Standard Reference database is the major source of food composition data in the United States and provides the foundation for most food composition databases in the public and private sectors. The SR-Legacy contains data on 7,793 food items and up to 150 food components. The SR data is used to develop nutrient values for the Food and Nutrient Database for Dietary Studies (FNDDS), which is used for assessment of nutrient intakes in the What We Eat in America component of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey used for national nutrition monitoring. SR data are also used in developing the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and Dietary Reference Intakes for a wide variety of nutrients, in creating meal plans in schools and day-care centers, in product development and labelling by manufacturers. Researchers in academia and government, dietitians advising their clients, and consumers interested in the nutrient content of their food also consult the database for their work.

2. USDA Global Branded Food Products Database (BFPD)
The USDA Global Branded Food Products Database (BFPD) was created by a Public-Private Partnership, with support from staff members of the Nutrient Data Laboratory, Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center, Agricultural Research Service, US Department of Agriculture.
Information in the BFPD is received from a number of food industry data providers, and these organizations are therefore responsible for the data. USDA supports the BFPD by standardizing the presentation of the data.
It is important to know that information in this database is provided by food brand owners and is label data. Brand owners are responsible for descriptions, nutrient data and ingredient information. USDA calculates values per 100g or 100ml from values per serving. Values calculated from %DV use current daily values for an adult 2,000 calorie diet.

3. Foundation Foods Database
This database includes values for nutrients and other food components on a diverse range of foods and ingredients as well as extensive underlying metadata. These metadata include the number of samples, sampling location, date of collection, analytical approaches used, and if appropriate, agricultural information such as genotype and production practices. The enhanced depth and transparency of Foundation Foods data can provide valuable insights into the many factors that influence variability in nutrient and food component profiles. The goal of Foundation Foods will be to, over time, expand the number of basic foods and ingredients and their underlying data. Foundation Foods will be a primary focus of efforts as the USDA nutrition databases expand and develop in the coming years.
